Over the years the season has gone from “Merry Christmas” to “Happy Holidays” to “Seasons Greetings” and now the local grocery store greets me with “Have an Inspired Holiday”.
I asked the clerk at the checkout what that meant and she said it means “Merry Christmas”. Why do we work so hard at changing or improving a season that needs no improving? I asked her why you don’t just say ‘Merry Christmas’? She said that the store policy is to say, “Have an Inspired Holiday” and then she leaned over the counter and in a quiet voice told me that deep down she still believes it should be “Merry Christmas”.
You see, changing the words for the season will never change the reason for the season. “For unto us a child is born” and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor”. That’s not just an “inspired holiday” in the manger… that’s Jesus the “Prince of Peace”! How can you improve on that?
As for the store, they may feel the greeting for Christmas needs to change and so as I left they wished me “An Inspired Holiday”... that’s too bad because after that greeting… all it really left me with was an uninspired shopping experience.
As for all of you, have a Merry Christmas… and as for the local grocery store, have an “Inspiring Merry Christmas”! ….
