I’ve been spending more time in the garden lately. I’m trying to spend at least one day a week using my hands and at the same time enjoy God’s gift of nature. Gardening is something new to me… in the past it was limited to cutting the lawn and planting flowers at the beginning of the season… this usually defaulted to planting whatever flowers were on sale… It is also a very large learning curve for me as I learn more about flowers, differing varieties, care of bushes and annual versus perennial.
One product that I have been using that I find extremely effective is a product called ‘wipe out’, sometimes called ‘round up’. When you spray this extremely strong chemical in the cracks of your driveway or sidewalk, it destroys weeds and any unwanted growth. I have also discovered that ‘wipe out’ kills flowers, rose bushes, young trees, low flying birds, squirrels and my neighbours ‘prize winning’ climbing vine… What I didn’t know about ‘wipe out’ is that it has been around a very long time. We read in Psalm 51:1 “Generous in love-God, give grace! Huge in mercy-wipe out my bad record.” (The Message)
When we come to God with a ‘sorry’ on our lips and ask for forgiveness, he literally “wipes out” our sin. Nothing is left!
As I sit on our back deck looking at my lush green lawn surrounded by our lifeless dark brown garden (with absolutely no weeds I might add) the phrase “wipe out” in Psalm 51 has a whole new meaning for me… I finally get the connection…
